FAITH & CULTURE: When Prayers Go Unanswered: Faith in the Face of Silence

By Ugochukwu Ugwuanyi

Public conversations about faith often intensify when personal experiences appear to contradict belief. Recently, remarks by Kanye West resurfaced online, in which he expressed frustration over prayers that seemed unanswered. Around the same time, his daughter, North West, spoke about her desire to share faith and encourage others to follow God’s ways.
The contrast between both perspectives highlights a question many believers quietly wrestle with: what happens when prayer does not produce immediate or visible results?

When Faith Meets Disappointment
For many Christians, prayer represents trust in a responsive God. Teachings often encourage persistence, with passages such as Luke 18:1 emphasizing the need to “pray and not give up.”

Yet lived experience does not always align neatly with expectation. Moments of silence, delay, or apparent inaction can lead to doubt, not only about outcomes, but about the process itself.

This tension is not unique. It is a recurring theme in both scripture and contemporary faith conversations.

Rethinking How Prayer Works
One interpretation of unanswered prayer focuses less on frequency or intensity, and more on approach. Biblical teachings caution against empty repetition, suggesting that prayer is not about volume or performance, but sincerity and clarity.
In this context, prayer becomes less about persuading God and more about expressing trust. The emphasis shifts from quantity of words to depth of understanding.

This perspective challenges the assumption that longer or louder prayers are inherently more effective.

Faith, Action, and Responsibility
Kanye West’s comments also raise a broader issue: the relationship between prayer and action. His suggestion that effort must accompany belief reflects a viewpoint shared by many, that faith should not replace responsibility.

Within Christian teaching, this relationship is often understood as complementary rather than opposing. Prayer and action are not mutually exclusive; instead, they operate together, shaping both perspective and response.
Where one is emphasized at the expense of the other, imbalance can occur.

Symbolism and Expression in Prayer
The article also points to physical expressions of faith, such as lifting hands during prayer, as symbolic acts of surrender, focus, and expectation. In various traditions, such gestures serve as outward reflections of inward conviction.
For some believers, these practices deepen engagement. For others, they remain optional expressions rather than requirements.
The diversity of interpretation again reflects the broader complexity of faith practice.

A Continuing Conversation
Unanswered prayer remains one of the most personal and sensitive aspects of belief. It touches on expectation, disappointment, and hope, often all at once.

Rather than offering a single conclusion, the conversation invites reflection. It encourages believers to consider not only what they expect from prayer, but how they understand it.
In a world that often demands immediate results, faith continues to operate within a different rhythm, one that allows room for both conviction and unanswered questions.
