A Florida school teacher and mother of four, Eileen McGill Fox, was thrust into a life-changing health crisis after discovering that her husband of three decades had been unfaithful, according to a report by the Tampa Bay Times.
Following the revelation, Fox visited a healthcare clinic for a standard STI screening. She was relieved when the results came back negative for infections such as syphilis, gonorrhea, and HIV. However, her relief was short-lived.
About a year later, during a routine Pap smear, doctors detected human papillomavirus (HPV) a common s+xually transmitted infection that is not typically included in basic STI tests. The virus significantly increased her risk of developing several cancers, including those affecting the cervix, an+s, v¥lva, v@gina, and throat.
In February 2019, Fox was diagnosed with v¥lva cancer. Shortly after, she was also diagnosed with cervical cancer, and in 2023, she received a third diagnosis an+l cancer.
She later learned that HPV, and many of the cancers linked to it, are largely preventable through vaccination. However, the vaccine became available in 2006, by which time she was already married with children and had not considered getting it.
Since her diagnoses, Fox has undergone extensive medical treatment. She has had a hysterectomy and continues to receive regular cancer care. Parts of her labia have been surgically removed, and she frequently undergoes painful laser and skin removal procedures on her v¥lva and within the an@l canal to eliminate precancerous cells.
