At least 24 dead after passenger bus plunges into Padma River in Bangladesh

A Dhaka-bound bus (Souhardo Paribahan) carrying about 40–50 passengers lost control while attempting to board a ferry at Daulatdia Ghat No. 3 in Goalanda Upazila, Rajbari District, on Wednesday evening March 25, 2026,

The vehicle overturned, broke through barriers, and sank about 9 meters (30 feet) into the river. Some passengers swam to safety or were rescued, while others were trapped inside.

Rescue teams, including divers and the salvage vessel Hamza, later recovered the bus. As of the morning of March 26, at least 24 bodies have been recovered, with reports ranging between 23 and 26. Search operations are ongoing.

The incident occurred during heavy post-Eid travel at the Daulatdia ferry terminal. An investigation has been launched.
