Comedian and skit maker Brain Jotter has spoken about the growing lack of trust in Nigeria, saying people now have to be extremely careful when paying for products and services because of widespread deception.
Speaking during an interview, he said even sending a driver money for fuel could result in dishonesty, as the driver might spend less than the amount given and still produce a receipt.
“The lack of trust in Nigeria is alarming. You send your driver ₦5,000 for fuel, but he’s buying ₦3,500. If you ask him for a receipt, you’ll get the receipt. Men dey run receipt.”
Brain Jotter also recalled buying an expensive wig for his mother despite knowing little about wigs. He said the experience made him question whether some products are genuinely worth their prices.
“I wanted to buy a wig for my mama. I bought this wig, ₦800 and something thousand. And I don’t know about wigs. Then she brought the wig and shampoo, and more. Overpriced nonsense everywhere.”
He further raised concerns about the authenticity of products, particularly beverages, saying consumers often struggle to verify what they are buying.
Sharing another personal experience, Brain Jotter recalled purchasing a Toyota Sienna after relying on a mechanic to inspect it. He said he later discovered that the vehicle’s fault had only been cleared rather than properly fixed.
According to him, the seller assured him that the engine was good, but he later noticed an unusual sound coming from it. He added that the car had a mileage of about 10,000 and that the seller described its engine as a “mad engine.”
Brain Jotter said he eventually realised the vehicle had serious problems and revealed that he did not drive it for more than four days.
“That car, I no drive am four days. Nigerians go through these things.”
