“I Make Movies for Intellectuals” — Kunle Afolayan Responds to Reviews of Anikulapo Series

Filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has reacted to mixed reviews trailing his Anikulapo series, stating that not everyone is expected to understand or appreciate his style of storytelling.

According to Afolayan, he has seen various opinions online — including from people he believes lack a deep understanding of filmmaking. He emphasized that he creates movies for “intellectuals and people that can think,” not for what he described as “gbas gbos” entertainment.

He added that the series unfolds across multiple episodes, and judging it based on just one episode misses the broader narrative.

“I don’t expect everyone to like my movies. The people I made the movie for understood it scholars, professors, and deep thinkers,” he said, encouraging critics to seek clarification rather than draw quick conclusions.
