Wooden statue of a Chokwe dancer wearing an “Mwana Pwo” mask, Angola, 19th to early 20th century.

“Mwana Pwo” is a specific type of “makishi”, or ancestral mask, that represents an idealized female ancestor, though they are exclusively worn by male dancers during initiation ceremonies among the Chokwe people of eastern Angola, southwestern DR Congo and northwestern Zambia. In their gestures and movements, the dancers mimic female gracefulness, thus transmitting fertility to their male spectators.
