The Niger Delta Peoples Salvation Force (NDPSF) leader, Asari Dokubo, has threatened to attack the Niger Republic with his own private army in order to reestablish democracy there if given permission.
Abdourahamane Tchiani, the head of the Nigerien presidential guard, organized the coup that removed President Mohamed Bazoum from power on July 26.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) imposed a deadline for the coup leaders to hand back control to Bazoum, but they have ignored it despite threats of military action from the ECOWAS.
Dokubo claimed in a widely shared video that if the federal government of Nigeria gave him permission, his army would be able to take over the Niger Republic.
“If the government commissions me and my people to go to Niger Republic, we will go. We will defeat them and we will come back victorious. It is not a boast”.
“If Benin republic likes, let them go and bring anybody, they are human beings like us. We will go there, defeat them and restore democratic order”, Asari said.
At the moment, Nigerians are finding the statement from the ex-militant more funny than they find it dangerous.
“This man is doing too much”, a Nigerian wrote.
