A police station in Awada area of the Onitsha metropolis in Anambra State has been engulfed in flames, as reported by bystanders in the early hours of 20th February 2023.
The fire was said to be caused by gunmen, who attacked the security post, allegedly killing scores of policemen before setting properties on fire.
The attack came not more than 24 hours after five young men were also shot by men of the Nigerian army at the 3-3 area of the same city, Onitsha.
Currently, tension has been rising among the civilian population as the election draws closer.
The tension is a result of the uncertain security situation in the state in the face of sit-at-home orders given by Finland-based self-acclaimed IPOB spokesman, Simon Ekpa.
It’s also important to note that attacks on police stations and policemen are not a new occurrence in the southeastern part of Nigeria, but the attacks crept to an all-time high frequency in 2022.
