The State of Israel was given observer status in the African Union (AU) in 2021, and they were given the privilege to attend AU summits until a few African nations kicked against it recently.
Southern African countries of South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, and Northern African country, Algeria moved against the observer status of the Israelis, and they were kicked out of the 2023 AU summit as a result.
Africans commented on the issue and wondered if African countries or the AU attend continental sessions elsewhere, such as in Asia and Europe as observers.
“Do AU and other African countries become observers when EU, NATO, ASIANA or American nations are having their conferences or it only applies to AU meetings?”, a netizen and African asked.
A video emerged showing the diplomats from Israel being ushered out of the venue.
