The world-renowned Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Adichie has voiced what she thinks about the culture of paying the bride price, especially among the Igbos.
She inferred that the practice of making prospective husbands bring huge sums of money gives the men a sense of “purchasing someone” after they have struggled to meet the financial demands listed by their prospective wife’s families.
She suggested a practice of both the families of the man and the woman bringing gifts to celebrate the union. Chimamanda opined that this practice may balance things out, and cut the cost of getting married among the Igbos.
The 45-year-old writer said this while speaking to Bounce Radio.
