In a tragic incident, gunmen attacked the convoy of Chief Chris Uba, a prominent political figure in Anambra State, resulting in the death of four individuals, including two policemen. The assailants targeted Uba’s convoy at Uga junction in Aguata local government area, sparking a fierce gun battle with the police.
Sources indicate that Chief Chris Uba was able to escape the attack unharmed due to the bulletproof nature of his vehicle. The gunmen, apparently intending to kidnap the politician, engaged in a shootout with the police, leading to the casualties.
It remains unclear whether the assailants succeeded in kidnapping anyone from the convoy. The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident and the loss of two policemen, specifying that they were operatives from the Enugu State command.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Tochukwu Ikenga, the attackers, disguised in military fatigue, seemed to be on a kidnap mission. The police officers approached the armed gang, prompting an exchange of gunfire. The police, cautious not to harm bystanders in the traffic, retaliated, causing the attackers to flee.
In response to the incident, the police launched an intensive manhunt for the armed insurgents. The Mobile Forward Operating Base, actively patrolling the area during the Christmas celebrations, swiftly responded to the scene. They recovered a Lexus SUV used by the attackers, defused an improvised explosive device found in the vehicle, and retrieved an AK-47 Rifle belonging to one of the slain policemen.
The attack on Chief Chris Uba’s convoy underscores the security challenges faced by prominent figures in certain regions and emphasizes the need for robust law enforcement measures.
