The first primary school in Northern Nigeria was founded in 1865 in Lokoja, present-day Kogi State, by Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther, and thus represents the beginnings of “boko” learning and English literacy north of the Niger.
The school, which is now named after Bishop Crowther, stands on the grounds of Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Lokoja, Kogi State, and is still a working primary school, under the control of the government. Credit: HistoryLand
