Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, has been appointed acting president after the president fled the country amidst ongoing protests, the speaker of parliament announced on Wednesday.
Mr Wickremesinghe also declared a nationwide state of emergency. This is coming on the day outgoing President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is expected to tender his resignation.
Protesters have stormed the prime minister’s office trying to gain access. They had on Saturday set the prime minister’s residence on fire.
