A commercial Miami to Chile flight with 271 passengers onboard made an emergency landing in Panama on Monday night after sudden collapse of an airline pilot.
The flight, operated by the Chilean airline LATAM, was traveling to the Chilean capital of Santiago with roughly 270 passengers when the pilot suffered an apparent cardiac arrest in the plane’s restroom three hours into the roughly eight-hour flight, according to a report by the Sun.
The pilot was identified as 56-year-old Iván Andaur, who had 25 years of flying experience, according to Newsroom Panama.
“LATAM Airlines Group reports that flight LA505 yesterday, which was on the Miami-Santiago route, had to land at the Tocumen International Airport in Panama due to a medical emergency for one of the three members of the command crew. When the plane landed, emergency services provided life-saving help, but the pilot sadly passed away,” the airline said in a statement.
