Nsodie were commissioned to memorialize deceased royals, and were placed in sacred groves known as “asensie” (place of the pots), which are often the locations of graves or the home of spirits and a focal point during funerary ceremonies when libations are poured there in honor of these ancestors.
There is a surprisingly large amount of stylistic diversity in these sculptures, representative of different times, locations and the taste of individual sculptors and their clientele.
In Akan culture, women were responsible for ceramics production, and the sculptors of these figurative pieces were naturally also women.
