The upcoming Nigerian Presidential election of 2023 will be of huge drama as many political parties are preparing their candidate to be the next Nigerian President. As the campaign for the presidential race is ongoing, the current Nigeria President, Muhammadu Buhari is under pressure by some political influencers to change the Nigerian Constitution and run for third team.
According to the Presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu; “Buhari is under pressure to change Nigerian Constitution and run for third term”.
Buhari’s term elongation was rumoured in 2019, when the presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, on Channels TV stated, ” in fact, from 2019, we have seen persuaders come before our very eyes and tell us that leaders should not go, that term limits are a nuisance and should be eliminated”.
Shehu thus did not mention those behind the move or persuasion but stated clearly on behalf of the President, ” I am not here to stay a day beyond my term of office”.
The President’s spokesperson highlighted that Buhari is more democratic than Nigerian former presidents that wished for term elongation, in the person of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and late Umaru Musa Yar’ Adua. Shehu further opined, “We have seen people on death beds unwilling to go, and persuaders are saying ‘no, they will keep power until they go to the grave,”
Insinuating that Yar’Adua’s handlers resisted handing over power to Jonathan Goodluck. Shehu insisted that Buhari is willing to leave office after the 2023 Presidential election as revealed to the embattled British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson during the 26th commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Kigali, Rwanda before the recent persuasions came up again on Monday, 11th July 2023.
