Nigerian man allegedly lost his life while in the custody of the South African Police in Johannesburg earlier today.
The circumstances surrounding the death remain shrouded in uncertainty, prompting authorities to launch an urgent investigation into the matter.
The man is identified as Abiodun Victor Olawunmi.
Details of the incident are still sketchy at the time of filing this report, however, a Sandton, Gauteng-based Nigerian man from Oyo State, Edward Sunday, wrote in a post: “Nigerian suffocated by South African Police”
It was gathered that police arrested the deceased on Saturday, July 15, 2023 during a raid in Johannesburg Central and its environ by Minister of Police Bheki Cele.
Upon receiving news about the arrest, his brothers were said to have been preparing to go and see him at the police station when they got a call from an officer informing him of Abiodun’s death.
When the brothers got to the Johannesburg Central Police Station, they saw his lifeless body at the parking lot.
Meanwhile, photos posted by Nigerians in South Africa Facebook page, show Nigerian nationals protesting over the death of Olawunmi.
