The Nigeria Police Force has reportedly refunded more than N80 million, which was allegedly extorted by the Anti-Cyber Crime Unit attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Rivers State Police Command. The funds were returned to Davidson John Atubi, Chairman of a pipeline surveillance facility.
Human rights activist Israel Joe confirmed the reimbursement, stating that the refund included an equivalent of almost N89 million, two plasma television sets, gold worth over N5 million, and a standing fan that had been taken from the victim’s house. The victim and Joe’s team received the funds and items on Friday, December 22, 2023.
Joe expressed gratitude to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, for ensuring justice in the case and commended the cleanup efforts within the Rivers State Police Command. He urged the new Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, CP Tunji Disu, to continue monitoring the activities of unscrupulous policemen.
