Mozambican government has said that its forces has subdued the most wanted leader of the Isaic state group formed in the Northern part of the country.
The statement made known by the Defence ministry said Ibn Omar, who led an offensive against Cabo Delgado province and Hotel Palma had led the insurgents since 2017, but eventually met his Waterloo alongside two other members.
There has been no independent confirmation of the deaths.
A month before that, Mozambique’s military launched a major offensive against the Islamists with support of other African countries and according to them the Islamic leader was killed in a forest in Macao in what was described as the Army’s foreign allies offensive.
It happened on Tuesday, said Mozambique’s President Filipe Nyusi during a news conference on Friday.
The UN says the violence in northern Mozambique has forced more than a million people to flee their homes.
The violence has also forced a multi-billion-dollar gas project to be put on hold.
The gas and ruby-rich province of Cabo Delgado has been a magnet for Islamists seeking to exploit the rich area.
