Professor T. Uzodinma Nwala speaks on African philosophy and the Igbo question in contemporary Nigeria.
Only a few Nigerians, or rather, only a few people worldwide, can compare Professor Nwala’s educational achievements. More importantly, however, is his role in defending the Igbo position in the Nigerian amalgamation.
Professor T. Uzodinma Nwala was born in 1942 in Itu Ezinihitte, Mbaise, Imo State. He studied at the University of Nigeria Nsukka on a university scholarship and graduated as the first graduate in philosophy from a Nigerian university. While pursuing his advanced degrees (MA, PhD) at the prestigious Graduate Faculty of the New School for Social Research, New York, he was awarded the Hiram J. Haille Fellowship as the best student of his year. In 1985 he received his professorship.
Nwala is the author of numerous books on African philosophy and is considered the founder of African philosophy. One of his outstanding works in this field is his 1973 publication Igbo Philosophy, a contribution to the debate on whether there is anything that can genuinely be called African philosophy.
Professor T. Nwala is considered the founder of African philosophy because of his numerous publications in the field and his pioneering role in establishing the Department of Philosophy in some Nigerian universities. The Professor has taught philosophy in most Nigerian universities, including Abuja, Kogi State University and Benue State University.
Apart from being the intellectual father of African philosophy, Professor
Professor Uzodinma Nwala is not only an intellectual pioneer at the international level but also a leading figure in the movement to promote Igbo civilisation. In this regard, he has been the secretary and coordinator of various Igbo delegates’ forums.
