The Lagos State Government has announced plans to commence immediate repair works on the damaged pedestrian bridge at Alapere Estate Bus Stop along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The decision comes after a container-laden truck crashed into the bridge, raising safety concerns and prompting the closure of the bridge for public use.
Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, emphasized the government’s commitment to the safety of its citizens and highlighted the strategic importance of the pedestrian bridge. Osiyemi announced the immediate commencement of construction works on the damaged bridge and assured the public that traffic personnel would be deployed to manage pedestrian crossings during the repair period.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure, Engineer Olufemi Daramola, explained that an assessment of the bridge would be conducted to perform integrity tests on the substructure. This assessment aims to determine the extent of the damage and guide the reconstruction works necessary for the bridge to resume public use safely.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, urged commuters to exercise caution and warned that drivers violating safety measures would be prosecuted. The damage to the bridge, constructed 11 years ago, was caused by a container-laden truck attempting to pass under the bridge with a load exceeding the provided headroom, impacting both vehicular traffic and pedestrian users. Contingency measures, including signage and visual displays, will be implemented during the repair period to ensure safety.
