An Onitsha resident revealed this to MAD while it was checking the recent level of political apathy in the streets of the commercial city.
The young man, aged 24 years, whose name was withheld revealed that he wanted to register at an INEC PVC registration centre, SS John and Paul Iba Pope, Awada Onitsha.
He expressed his disappointment when he was asked to pay N6,000 by an INEC official for his voters card registration to be done.
He ended up not getting a voters card because he refused to pay.
Currently, he’s disenfranchised.
Similar excuses abound on the streets, as a POS operator, who simply identified as Emmanuel said he was unavailable to register because of the large queue of people who were waiting to be registered by the outstretched INEC personnel.
A positive drawn from MAD includes the sight of an elderly man who was found curiously asking for the nearest PVC collection point, to get his voters card.
Political apathy is a menace to democracy in the Southeastern but from interactions with some residents, the emergence of the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi gave them a reason to go and get their permanent voters cards.
Some said it’s just a will to participate in the voting process because they are now eligible to vote by age.
