As the dispute between the Federal Government and the leadership of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) lingers, the government has found a way to work around ASUU’s demands.
The FG has decided to recognize The Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA), a breakaway faction of ASUU, as fresh negotiations have failed.
The Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA) has been invited to a ceremony to be formally registered as an academic union in Nigeria.
This ceremony will be headed by the minister of labour and employment, Dr Chris Ngige, and will hold at Hon. Minister Conference Room, Federal Secretariat, Phase 1, Abuja.
ASUU strike has kept the majority of Nigerian university students at home since 14th February 2022.
The misunderstanding stems from the inability of the Federal Government to renegotiate the agreement it signed with ASUU in 2009, the replacement of the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS), with the UTAS, as the payment platform in the university sector.
ASUU have been ordered to go back to work by the National industrial court, on September 21, 2022, but the union refused.
An ASUU appeal is currently in court, and Nigerian students’ (now entrepreneurs) wait continues.
