According to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps(NSCDC), it has detained four suspects and stopped a truck carrying a significant amount of vandalized rail rails hidden in iron scraps.
The arrest was made by the Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad of the NSCDC, according to a statement signed and issued by the Corps Spokesperson, Babawale Afolabi, on Thursday.
According to Afolabi, the truck and the four suspects were captured on Monday at Sabon Pagi, Lafia, Nasarawa State, along the Lafia-Akwanga-Abuja highway.
The four suspects have been detained pending more investigations and actions, he added.
The statement read, “On August 14, 2023, about 10: 30hrs, the CG’s Special Intelligence Squad, who are on specialised operation to checkmate nefarious activities of rail line vandals, arrested four suspected vandals who disguised as scavengers.
“It was later discovered that the suspects have vandalised rail track irons and concealed them inside scrap iron materials before loading the vandalized rail track irons into a truck that will convey them to the buyers.”
“Details of the truck were given as an articulated DAF truck with registration number BSA 899XA and the four suspected vandals are 27 years old Anasi Ali who is the driver of the truck. Others are Yusuf Idris, 25, Hafis Idris, 18 and Nasiru Abdullahi, 28, who served as an escort.
“Items recovered from the vandals are; a DAF truck, large quantities of offloaded scrap irons and large quantities of vandalised railways irons.”
