Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has said the Nigeria Police Force has significantly reduced cases of misconduct and impunity among its officers, noting that complaints from members of the public have dropped considerably under his leadership.
Speaking during a public engagement, the IGP said the volume of complaints against police personnel has reduced compared to when he assumed office.
“If you are sincere to yourself, you will know that complaints against police officers have reduced tremendously,” he said.
“When I came, I was bombarded with complaints left, right, and everywhere. Today, the complaints are just trickling in.”
Disu attributed the improvement to the activities of the Police Complaint Response Unit (CRU), which he said remains accessible to Nigerians through multiple platforms.
According to him, the unit’s contact details are publicly available online, including on X (formerly Twitter), Instagram and Facebook, making it easy for citizens to report cases of police misconduct.
“Give them the complaint, and they will work on it, and they will call you back and give you feedback,” he stated.
The police chief stressed that his administration has made significant progress in tackling misconduct within the force.
“We have been able to reduce this impunity amongst our men to the barest minimum,” Disu said.
He urged Nigerians not to remain silent whenever they encounter wrongdoing by police officers, assuring them that every genuine complaint would be investigated.
“The most important thing is, if anything happens, ensure that you complain to us and we will act on it,” he added.
