Rivers CP removes DPO accused of extortion, dismantle illegal check point

The Rivers State Police Command has removed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Oyigbo Division following allegations that he extorted N500,000 from a resident, as authorities commence an investigation into the matter.

Meanwhile Rivers State CP, Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered the removal of illegal roadblocks and warned officers against extortion and misconduct. He directed police to carry out stop-and-search duties without obstructing traffic, warning that violators will face disciplinary action.

Earlier today, CP Adepoju led a team on a statewide monitoring exercise along major routes, including the East-West Road corridor (Ikwerre and Emohua LGAs) and areas near the Rivers-Imo boundary.

He was accompanied by senior officers: Deputy CP (State CID), Assistant CP (Operations), Mobile Police Squadron Commanders, tactical unit heads, and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs).

The Purpose of the Operation is to Enforce the Inspector-General of Police (IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu) directive against:

  1. Unauthorized roadblocks that obstruct traffic.
  2. Extortion of motorists.
  3. Officers not properly dressed or without visible name tags.
  4. Officers must carry out stop-and-search professionally without blocking roads.
