Trump Tightens Green Card Rules, Set To Deny U.S. Citizenship To Immigrants Over their Online Political Views

Immigrants could now be denied a pathway to U.S. citizenship under new guidance reportedly introduced by the Trump administration over their political expressions on social media.

According to a report citing internal Department of Homeland Security (DHS) training materials, applicants may face penalties for expressing views considered “anti–American,” including criticism of Israel online, participation in pro-Palestinian protests, or burning the American flag.

The report also claimed that immigration officers were told to treat actions such as holding a sign calling for the overthrow of the U.S. government as a negative factor in citizenship decisions.

It added that green card approval could be discouraged for individuals seen as endorsing or promoting “anti–American views.”

Further scrutiny may also apply to those linked to antisemitic ideologies or groups, with officers directed to focus on applicants who allegedly spread antisemitic content “through rhetorical or physical actions,” especially in connection with campus activities following the October 7, 2023 Hamas att@cks on Israel.
