Nigerian singer Fave has spoken about the different standards female artists face in the music industry, saying they often have to do “ten times more” than their male counterparts to get noticed.
According to the singer,
“We’re not measured by our talent or our stage presence or just the normal metric that you’re supposed to measure an artist by. We’re measured by what we wear, if your tummy’s not flat, if your skin is…”Fave said.
She also noted that discussions about female artists, particularly in Nigeria and Africa, often focus on their appearance and s+xuality rather than their music.
“Every time I take a look and see on the internet what people are talking about a female artist for, especially in Nigeria, or in Africa generally, it’s never really about the music. It’s more about people’s s+xual desires or their fantasies about you,” she said.
