The Southeast chapter of the Renewed Hope for Greater Nigeria (RHGN) has called on former Anambra State governor and Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to step down from the 2027 presidential race and support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election.
The group’s Southeast leader, Mazi Franklin Ngoforo, made the appeal in Owerri on Saturday after a meeting focused on mobilising support for Tinubu across the five Southeast states.
Ngoforo said RHGN plans to engage prominent Igbo leaders, including the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo under Senator John Azuta Mbata, Chief Emeka Anyaoku and Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe, to persuade Obi to reconsider his 2027 ambition.
He explained that the proposed intervention was not aimed at undermining Obi’s political influence, but at encouraging him to prioritise what he described as the long-term political interests of Ndigbo over the immediate pursuit of the presidency.
