A 100-level student of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), identified as Favour Olaniyi, has been found d+ad near his off-campus residence after reportedly cons+ming a p%isonous substance suspected to be an inse+ticide.
The incident occurred on Saturday, May 9, 2026, when the student was discovered lifeless by some of his colleagues. They alleged that he may have taken his own life, although this has not been officially confirmed by the university.
In a statement issued by the institution’s Director of Corporate Communication and Protocol, Adegbenro Adebanjo, the university expressed sadness over the development and confirmed that relevant authorities were immediately notified.
The statement noted that:
“After the incident was brought to the attention of the university management, the university security apparatus immediately informed the police,”
“Officers from the force were dispatched to the scene, while medical officials from the university and security operatives coordinated the evacuation of the body to the morgue.”
It also confirmed that the student’s parents had been informed:
“The parents of the student have since been informed about the unfortunate development.”
Authorities further stated that the police had begun investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death, while the university pledged full cooperation with security agencies.
The statement also included condolences from the institution:
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his parents and family members at this very difficult time.”
FUTA added that its Student Affairs Division had begun providing counselling support for students affected by the incident and encouraged students experiencing emotional or academic difficulties to seek help.
