Troops rescue five kidnap victims, repel bandits in zamfara highway attack

Troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA have rescued five kidnapped victims and repelled bandits following an attack on commuters along the Maru–Mayanchi–Gusau road in Zamfara State.

Security sources said the incident occurred at about 6:40 p.m. on March 29 when armed bandits attacked two vehicles conveying passengers along the busy route in Maru Local Government Area.

According to the sources, troops deployed at Forward Operating Bases Mayanchi and Fangaltama swiftly responded to the distress call and moved to the scene.

On arrival, the troops discovered that the attackers had killed one civilian and abducted 14 passengers.

“The troops immediately pursued the fleeing bandits along their withdrawal route and successfully rescued five of the abducted victims,” the source said.

Among those rescued were the wife of a serving military officer, Mrs Dami Nehemiah, her son, and three other passengers who sustained gunshot wounds during the attack.

The injured victims were evacuated to a medical facility for treatment.

The sources added that troops have continued to dominate the general area through aggressive patrols to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of commuters along the axis.
